For many of us, one of the greatest fears of aging isn’t wrinkles or gray hair — it’s losing our memory, our independence or the ability to recognize the people we love. While some changes in memory are a normal part of aging, dementia is not simply an inevitable part of getting older.
Up to 45% of dementia cases may be linked to risk factors that can be modified through healthy lifestyle choices — the most powerful ways to support long-term brain health.
Brain health isn’t just about memory, it’s about whole-person health. Everyday habits that support brain health include regular physical activity, nutritious eating, quality sleep, stress management, social connection, cognitive stimulation and healthy hearing and vision. It’s never too early or too late to make positive changes.
That’s the foundation of Brain Health Hui, a six-week, evidence-based program offered by the YMCA of Honolulu in partnership with Brain Matters Hawai‘i. Over weekly 90-minute sessions, ku¯puna learn practical strategies to support brain health while connecting with others. The program is free for Y members.
Each session combines gentle movement, discussions and hands-on activities focused on nutrition, exercise, sleep, stress management, hearing health, memory strategies and mindfulness. The program emphasizes practical habits for daily life.
A unique feature of Brain Health Hui is SMARTfit technology, an interactive system that combines movement with cognitive challenges. Participants match colors or shapes on a lighted board while balancing, stepping or performing gentle squats. These “dual-task” exercises challenge the brain and body simultaneously, improving reaction time, balance, coordination and memory through entertaining and engaging game-like activities.
Just as important, Brain Health Hui creates opportunities to build friendships and reduce social isolation — both important contributors to healthy aging. Many participants who began the program as strangers finished as friends, continuing to check in whenever they meet at the YMCA.
Interest has been so strong that every Brain Health Hui session has reached capacity shortly after registration opens.
Brain Health Hui isn’t about turning back the clock. It’s about helping people stay active, connected and independent as they age.
