  • What I Learned From Dr. McCauley

OctNov2016 - whatilearned_image1I want to share a helpful presentation by Dr. Bob McCauley, naturopathic doctor, master herbalist and certified nutritional consultant. His three books—Confessions of a Body Builder: Rejuvenating the Body with Spirillium, Chlorella, Raw Foods and Ionized Water (2000); Achieving Great Health (2005); and The Miraculous Properties of Ionized Water (2006) — show his passion for natural health.

He has been drinking one to two gallons of alkaline ionized water daily since 1997 and claims that the effects have been dramatic. He considers water a preventative measure to maintain an optimum health profile. Below are some excerpts from his recent presentation, “What Ionized Water Has Done for Me.”

“My stamina has increased by up to 30 percent; recovery time has decreased by a proportional amount. I never get sore joints and my knees have not been any trouble since starting to drink ionized water. I run two to six miles daily.”

“If I feel a sore throat coming on, I drink a few extra glasses of ionized water to keep it at bay. I think 60 to 80 percent of chronic diseases in our society would disappear if people were simply to drink enough water and maintain proper hydration.”

“The clarity of my thought processes has improved because of sufficient brain hydration. Ionized water provides my brain 80 percent of every sip of water I take.”

As the body hydrates, blood oxygen and energy levels increase in tandem. Oxygen (O2) breathed into the body dissolves in blood, lymph and spinal fluid, where it provides energy throughout the body. As O2 is used up, carbon dioxide (CO2) is produced and carried back to the lungs, where it is exhaled. This process allows us to use nutrients, generate energy, kill bacteria and viruses, and ward off cancer cells.

“Ionized water promotes healthy enzymatic cellular processes and rejuvenation,” said Dr. McCauley. “When we drink negatively charged ionized water, the cells in our bodies start to rejuvenate. Reverse aging occurs when the body reverts to a healthy cellular state. If you are 40 years old, you will not become a 20-year-old, but you can have the vitality of a 20-year-old.”

I learned that the effects of ionized water on the human body are profound, yet subtle. Ionizing water does not affect its taste, but some people say it feels different on the tongue and the skin.

After listening to Dr. McCauley, many people want to try alkaline ionized water. He once tried a sip;  now he recommends it to his patients and writes books about its positive benefits. That’s how it is when you find something helpful. It happened to me, too!

  • Longevity for All

I had the privilege of conversing with the Honorable George Ariyoshi, the longest serving governor of Hawai‘i and a World War II veteran. He told me a moving story about his experience as an American soldier in postwar Japan. He saw a young boy who was working very hard shining shoes. The boy’s dedication prompted Ariyoshi to ask him why he worked so hard. The boy responded that the country and his family were hurting, so he felt that his duty was to do his part to help make things better. Ariyoshi marveled at the boy’s mature attitude, and he realized that Japan would recover quickly if even the children had such a dedication to family and country.

I’m sure that many veterans have moving and life-enhancing stories to tell. We must keep our veterans alive and well so we can benefit from the wisdom they gained from their incredible experiences. But many die unnecessarily and too early due to lack of knowledge about how to stay healthy. Here are a couple of the tips I include in my health programs to keep participants as healthy as possible for as long as possible. In Chapter 4 of my book, The Peace Diet, I outline several anti-aging steps we can do right now.

    OctNov2016 - longevity_image1Avoid Tobacco

First, it is important to control our exposure to toxins and pollution by avoiding tobacco and thousands of other potentially toxic everyday substances. It is also important to eat clean, pesticide-free natural foods. Cancer rates have risen dramatically over the years: one in two-and-a-half people will get cancer in the U.S.—up from one in 21 in the 1970s.

    OctNov2016 - longevity_image2Control Blood Sugar

Second, controlling blood sugar is crucial in preventing memory loss and dementia. High blood sugar eventually closes off tiny blood vessels, including those in the brain. Constriction results in a gradual reduction in blood supply to brain cells. Strategies for controlling sugar include eating more complex carbohydrates and natural foods.

OctNov2016 - longevity_image3Reducing toxin exposure, eating clean and controlling blood sugar will enhance your body’s health, and reduce your body’s inflammation. By adopting healthy habits and implementing all eight health enhancements described in our longevity program, our veterans and all of us can live much longer, and preserve and share the wisdom of our years for the next generations.

  • Walking on an Underwater Treadmill

    OctNov2016 - walkingonunderwater_image1

Underwater treadmills (UTM) are revolutionizing physical therapy and fitness. Top athletes are utilizing UTM or treadmill pools for peak performance or speedy recovery after an injury. Underwater walking is very different from land-based walking, especially regarding shock absorption, energy expenditure and muscle activity.

Those with chronic conditions like osteoarthritis (OA) often avoid walking for exercise due to increased pain. In a study at Utah State University, OA patients reported a 140 percent increase in pain during land treadmill exercise compared to pain experienced during UTM sessions.

UTM users can exercise much longer against water resistance, increasing oxygen consumption and calorie burning.

Muscle activity is also higher, leading to greater hip, leg and foot strength, as well as improvements in core muscle groups throughout the body.

Many physical therapy clinics and athletic training rooms offer these systems — either self-propelled or motorized.

  • If Lois Can, Then How About You?

    Generations Magazine - August-September 2016 - If-Lois-Can_image1
“I know the arthritis isn’t going away, but I refuse to let it slow me down.” — Lois

I met Lois Kelsey in 2004 when speaking at a Mary Kay consultants’ meeting.

Lois told me her husband was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease. “I’m concerned that I won’t be able to care for him if I don’t get help with some strength and flexibility,” she said. Lois was active most of her life, raising four children as well as three boxer dogs that she trained and entered in shows. Even though she did all her own yardwork (mowing her large property and trimming trees), she needed to balance and strengthen all her muscles. Muscle imbalance and tightness is the cause of a lot of aches and pains!

Lois worked out with me in 2008 until her husband’s Alzheimer’s got severe. Her husband passed away in 2009 and she came back to see me in 2011. Now challenged with balance issues and arthritis in her spine, hips and hands, she wanted to get back to a regular training regimen. “I did my research and I know not moving would be the worst thing for me with arthritis,” said Lois.

We started doing specific exercises to address problem areas (see photos). We also improved her diet with more greens and less sugar intake to lower the amount of inflammation in her body. Arthritis feeds off sugar!

Lois turns 87 in July and continues to function independently without drugs. Lois is an inspiring example of not giving in to old age, no matter how big the challenge. She is staying independent through proper diet and exercise. Go Lois!

  • Doctors Say So

In my three previous articles, I explained what ionized, restructured alkaline water is. I also shared the potential benefits of drinking this healthy water — which may be the best water to drink. I have dedicated this article to what experts in the medical field say about this particular kind of water:

“Alkaline antioxidant water changes everything physiologically. The alkaline antioxidant water solves two of the major problems that cause aging and disease: low pH and free radicals. It provides ready antioxidants to keep our bodies from rotting and rusting through the process of oxidation. Who should be drinking the alkaline antioxidant water? The answer is simply everyone from children to octogenarians.”
    — Ben Johnson, MD, Doctor of Osteopathy (DO), and Naturopathic Medical Doctor (NMD)

“Restructured alkaline water may well be the best element or supplement you can put in your body. Did you know the Japanese have researched this subject for over 40 years and have found that drinking restructured alkaline water can relieve or reduce three causes for sickness, disease and premature aging.”
    — David S. Dyer, NMD, PhD

“The most important feature of alkaline water produced by a water alkalizer is its oxidation reduction potential (ORP). Water with a high negative ORP is of particular value in its ability to neutralize oxygen free radicals. This is the key benefit of water produced by a water alkalinizer that is not available by simply drinking water than has had some bicarb or other compounds dissolved in it to make it alkaline.”
    —  Ray Kurzwell, PhD, author and inventor, recipient of the National Medal of Technology in 1999, and inducted into the U.S. Patent Office’s Inventors National Hall of Fame in 2002

“I have administered over 5,000 gallons of this water for about every health situation imaginable… all [sicknesses] come from the same cause: too much tissue acid waste in the body.”
    — Theodore Baroody DC, ND, PhD, Dipl. Acu., author of the book Alkalize or Die

“We can heal ourselves by changing the environment inside our bodies. Potentially harmful invaders, then, will have nowhere to grow and will become harmless. High pH water, such as the water that comes from a good ionizer, neutralizes acids throughout the entire body. Since acids underlie all disease entities, nothing makes more sense than neutralizing these acids. One of my most often quoted statements goes like this: ‘When the fish is sick, change the water. We don’t feed the fish medicine. We give them clean water. When the cells of our body are sick, we must change the water and fluids in which all cells are bathed.’”
    — from The pH Miracle, written by Robert O. Young PhD, ND

As I have said before, all waters are not created equal. It may be time to give ionized water a sip.

  • Improve Memory & Reduce Pain

Generations Magazine - August-September 2016 - Improve-Memory-Reduce-Pain_image1Two of the most common concerns of aging are dementia and chronic pain. Both problems increase with age and rob our energy, but otherwise seem unrelated. Advances in science suggest that there are new ways to improve both these problems without medication.

    Preserving Nerve Function

Dementia and chronic pain are connected—memory and chronic pain both involve nerve cells. Your brain is a massive concentration of about 100 billion nerve cells. Pain sensors in your body connect to the brain through long nerve cells that course throughout the body. Nerve cells in the brain and body are some of the most energy-consuming cells in our bodies. Even an old brain and nerve cells need energy to work well.

    Boosting Brain Energy Naturally

A natural way to help brain function and nerve pain is an approach that is broadly considered “energy medicine.” In the March issue of Scientific American, an article called “Electric Cures” suggests that energy medicine approaches could assist with many health conditions and even replace some medications. This is not a new concept; the ancient art of acupuncture is an “energy medicine” treatment.

    Energy Field Effects

But there are promising new energy medicine approaches that are non-invasive and do not use drugs. One such approach is not a direct treatment at all. It is based on the concept of generally adding energy to the body with the use of a “scalar” energy field.

Adding energy to the whole body supposedly enhances the body’s ability to heal itself. In so doing, chronic pain may be reduced or eliminated. Adding energy may also help to awaken brain cells, giving them enough energy to function properly and improve memory.

    Published Science

We have been using a scalar field generator to boost whole-body energy and we have seen some surprising results. In one case, seizures in an autistic child were reduced by 90 to 95 percent. This study appeared in the peer-reviewed Journal of Neurology Research (Vol 2, No. 4, August 2012, pg 172. Link: www.neurores.org/index.php/neurores/article/view/134/145).

Other studies suggest that scalar energy treatments may have antidepressive effects and anti-inflammatory effects.

  • Wild Alaskan Sockeye Salmon Oil

    Generations Magazine - August-September 2016 - Salmon-Oil_image1

Wild fish is among the healthiest food in the world and wild Alaskan sockeye salmon is a nutrient-packed, very pure seafood alternative, according to the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA). It is free from pesticides and contaminates, and rich in omega-3 fatty acids, vitamins A, D, B6, B, E and essential amino acids. Omega-3 fatty acids help to protect heart health, reduce the risk of strokes, promote healthy skin and hair, and improve the ability to burn stored fats. Omega-3 fatty acids are called essential fatty acids, yet our bodies are unable to produce them on our own, which makes it important to consume omega-3 rich foods or supplements. According to the American Heart Association, consuming foods rich in omega-3 fatty acids is preferable, but those who may not get enough through diet alone should consult their doctors about taking a supplement. The most convenient way to harness the cariovascular benefits of wild salmon oil is to consume it as a supplement; Consumer Review suggests that a supplement should contain at least 1,500 mg of omega-3 as a daily dose. When shopping for a supplement, look for one that is made with wild Alaskan sockeye salmon oil.

  • Avoid Luggage Injuries

Summer travel is at its peak. As a physical therapist, when I am at at the airport, I assess everyone’s posture and body mechanics. Ouch! Not good, people! Neck, shoulder or back injuries are often due to wrestling with heavy, overpacked luggage. Repetitive pulling, pushing, lifting and lugging bags in and out of cars and overhead compartments, and up and down stairs can stress your body and potentially ruin a trip.

Follow these healthy tips on your vacation

    • Choose luggage that is light when empty
    • Buy luggage with swivel wheels
    • Use luggage with handles on two or three sides

    Generations Magazine - August-September 2016 - Avoid-Luggage-Injuries_image1

Stand as close as possible to the luggage with your feet at least shoulder-width apart. A narrow stance causes instability. Pull your abdominal muscles in toward your belly button, and bend at the hips and knees with a straight back. Lift with your leg muscles, which are stronger than your back muscles. Once you lift the luggage, hold it close to your body.

Do not twist when lifting and carrying. Point your toes and entire body in the direction you are headed. Stop and switch sides often when carrying a duffel or shoulder bag.

Pack light, keep your core muscles activated, use good body mechanics and enjoy your trip!

Generations Magazine - August-September 2016 - National-Honors_image1Dr. Yamamoto, a pediatric rheumatologist for over 20 years, has become a leader in her field. She cares for the majority of children diagnosed with Juvenile Arthritis (JA) in the state, who come from all eight islands. JA affects over 1,200 kids and their families in Hawai‘i.

Through her leadership, financial support and volunteer work, major partnerships and funding have been established, including Camp Mana’olana, a summer camp for kids with JA.

This May, Dr. Yamamoto was awarded the 2016 Earl Brewer Award for Physician Leadership. This national award is presented each year to a physician who has fostered a reputation for excellence in his or her field. She was also honored at the 2016 JA Conference in Phoenix and Philadelphia.

Dr. Yamamoto’s support and leadership of local JA programs has brought awareness to families with arthritis and has tapped into media opportunities, including the development of a video focussing on kids with JA that ultimately raised over $250,000 in the fall of 2014.

“Many seniors serve as the primary caregivers for grandchildren with JA,” said Dr. Yamamoto. “They should be supported for their critical role in helping these children access care, control their condition and stay healthy.”

  • Inflammation & Aging: Fluid Problems

Generations Magazine - Inflammation_image1 According to doctors and research groups from Mayo Clinic, Harvard Medical School, Centers for Disease Control and the University of Michigan Medical School, signs of aging and chronic disease have one thing in common—inflammation. A recent Time Magazine article also points to inflammation as the root cause of “old-age” aches, pains, fatigue and aging skin.

Merriam-Webster.com defines inflammation as “a local response to cellular injury that is marked by… redness, heat, pain, swelling, and often, loss of function and that serves as a mechanism initiating the elimination of noxious agents and of damaged tissue.” It is a natural reaction related to our immune response that helps us heal. When we get an infection, we want inflammation to kill bacteria and viruses.

Generations Magazine - Inflammation_image2Broad symptoms like arthritic joints and sore muscles are easy to relate to, but inflammation can occurs in the cells of the heart, arteries, nerves, kidneys, pancreas, stomach, lungs and liver if stressed or attacked by disease.

Today, scientists are studying the natural response of inflammation in individual cells. Why does inflammation sometimes fight infection and heal wounds — but run out of control with allergies and chronic diseases like arthritis? Why does our immune system use inflammation to kill off some “bugs,” but let some cancer cells sneak by and grow into tumors?

Generations Magazine - Inflammation_image3All cells are bathed in some kind of fluid: lymph, blood plasma, saliva, urine or spinal fluid. Our bodies are 60 percent water. Heart and brain tissue are 73 percent water; lungs, 83; blood and lymph, over 90. Now, researchers are looking at how pathways of enzymes, and interacting proteins and gases move in and out of our cells, flowing from one fluid system to another. Maintaining normal amounts of water in your body allows complex pathways of intercellular reactions to function normally.

Science may not yet know all answers to aging and chronic diseases, but one thing is certain—maintaining proper hydration is critical to good health. And now we know that water is important at a cellular level, too. Besides excercise, reduced stress and a low-fat, fiber-rich, whole-food diet, water is essential for digestion, regularity, and maintaining a healthy heart, blood system and brain.

Dr. Hiomi Shinya, author of The Enzyme Factor, developer of modern colonoscopy and director of the endoscopy center at Beth Israel Medical Center in New York City, puts his patients on vegetarian diets and ionized alkaline water to reverse all kinds of colonic disease. From his vast experience, he concludes that diet and drinking large amounts of pure, ionized water are important to staying healthy and keeping the body hydrated.

Generations Magazine - Inflammation_image4While scientists are finding cures for chronic diseases that all seniors face, the least we can do is to stay well hydrated. Drinking 2 to 3 liters (1 liter=1.06 quarts) of water every day takes some discipline; before starting, ask your doctor if you can tolerate increased fluid intake. If you can, you may find that some of your aches and pains were just a result of being “a quart or two low.”

  • Annatto: An Ancient Supplement

    Generations Magazine - Annato_image1

The more we learn, the smarter our ancestors seem to be. If you are Filipino, your family probably uses annatto or achuete to cook traditional foods. The seed is used throughout Latin America, the Caribbean and places around the world where the Spaniards sailed, such as the Philippines and the Marianas Islands. Today, annatto food coloring is used worldwide.

Bright red annatto seeds have a very hard core, so they must either be soaked in water, or warmed in oil or lard to extract the color. Then the hard seeds are carefully sieved out. The orange-colored oil is used to prepare arroz con pollo, red pork adobo and many other dishes. In ancient times, red-orange annatto dye was used in spiritual rites and handicrafts, as well.

Scientists now know that annatto seed oil also contains tocotrienols — active molecules of the vitamin E family. The benefits of vitamin E have been investigated extensively, but recent research has focused on tocotrienol because it can lower cholesterol and act as an antioxidant. Although rice and palm also yield tocotrienols (mixed with less active forms of vitamin E), annatto seed yields nearly pure tocotrienol that is rich in the kind of molecules that appear to carry the most health benefits.

Our ancient ancestors added vitamins to their diets as a part of their traditions; science is proving just how smart our ancestors were!
