Percy Ihara - Generations Magazine - February-March 2013My plan for 2013 is to improve my health and hopefully for you, our readers, you will make this a goal too. We pledge to bring you more resources and provide you with helpful tips on living that better quality of life. Last month’s 91 year old super senior Joan Packer
will always be my role model as I age and I will always remember her words to me “Don’t sit too long on the couch—stay active”.

In this issue our cover story brings to the forefront of the arthritis disease in Hawai‘i. I do have to thank Dr. Ritabelle Ferdandes who opened my eyes where this disease affects 236,000 people in Hawaii. We feature Dr. Thomas Kane who is the Arthritis Foundation of Hawai‘i’s Medical Honoree. His personal commitment to this cause and to promote awareness is inspiring.

I also want you to mark your calenders as our very popular workshop is coming up.

    Elderhood Project/Generations Magazine’s
7th annual “Aging in Place” workshop
Friday August 9th at the Ala Moana Hotel
    from 9am–3pm.

This is also a call for exhibitors to exhibit at this event where over 800 seniors and their families attend. Exhibitors please email Hope Young at Hope@kokuacare.com. More information to follow in our June/July issue.

Lastly, a special call for **Mother’s Day** stories and sentiments. We would like to honor the very special person in our lives—our mom. This will be your chance to tell her how special she is. I’m requesting our readers to submit their warmest memories or sentiments of their mother in celebration of Mother’s Day in May. We hope to print some of your submissions in our April/May issue and send your thanks and appreciation to your moms. You may submit it by mail or email us with the subject “My Mom.” Please note: maximum of 250 words, plus a photo (if you have it); and materials must be received by March 18.*

Don’t forget, in addition, we are always looking for stories, pictures and events from you—our valued readers.

Happy Holidays to you and your families from Generations Magazine!

From our first issue with Kirk Matthews in August 2010, Generations Magazine has been dedicated to Hawai‘i’s seniors and their families to provide resourceful and trusted information. We make every effort to provide articles that inform, inspire and motivate you to live a better quality of life.

We are so thankful to all of our sponsors and business partners that support our magazine as they are the most trusted partners we could find. Please support these companies as well and thank them for their commitment to you, the senior.

Percy Ihara and Diane Cadinha - Generations Magazine - February-March 2013
    Percy Ihara and Diane Cadinha

In this issue, we feature and thank three active seniors—Joan Packer, Victor Hawthorne and Doris Hara with their personal trainer Diane Cadinha on their stories. If you remember, we featured Joan in a story in our April/May issue earlier this year. After I read the article, I had to meet this 91 year old youngster. She inspired so many of our readers, including me, to get off our butts to exercise. According to Doris, Joan’s story inspired her to do something about her health now since Joan didn’t start exercising until later in her life, so she said she wanted to do this also.

As a procrastinator myself, I am now a believer in exercising and learning from a personal trainer to live a truly better quality of life to avoid health issues down the road. I have to thank personal trainer Diane Cadinha for working with me and teaching me the importance of exercise and also inspiring to put my health first and keep the body moving. If you want to avoid health issues, relieve stress and rejuvenate your body, call Diane or look for a personal trainer that specializes in working with seniors.

In 2013, please keep Generations Magazine in front of you as we continue to bring wonderful articles on healthy and active aging, as well as stories about seniors in our community who motivate us all to live well in Hawai‘i. We always love to hear from our readers, so please continue to write, email or call us to let us know what you want to read about.

Lastly, don’t forget to check us online at www.Generations808.com, as all our current and past issues are posted there, along with all past resource guides, and especially our most popular listing of “Senior Discounts.”

    Happy Holidays and always…Live well!

Linda Coble and Percy Ihara - Generations Magazine - October-November 2012This fall, I hope you will exercise your right as an American to vote on November 6th. Generations Magazine has Linda Coble to thank for our flag-waving cover story, as she is one of my favorite ladies, community leaders, and I am honored to call her my friend. We’d also like to thank Principal Shannon Goo of Lincoln Elementary School for allowing us to shoot the magazine’s cover on campus, as my son Zachary and his schoolmates had a blast. If you need some inspiration to vote this year (or general voting information), turn to our cover story, Make Your Voice Count.

With this year’s Senior Fair just finishing, it reminds me of all the great agencies and non-profit companies we have in Hawai‘i that support our ku¯ puna. My hats off to companies such as Project Dana, the Caregiver Foundation of America, Catholic Charities and government agencies like the Retired Senior Volunteer Program, Senior Companion program and Sage PLUS.

As with the past two Senior Fair’s, Generations Magazine handed out magazines and took the opportunity to talk with our readers. We also conducted our annual reader survey. We thank all those who shared comments, as we received plenty: “Great. Very Informative — Right On — Very Educational — Great Magazine! — Bright Future — Great Advice — I love the magazines — Read them faithfully — Enjoy your magazine!!! My daughter (CPA) reads it also to share info with her clients — Very good items — Great, super, informative — Please continue this wonderful service.”

We literally had several hundred readers complete our survey that automatically entered them for a free subscription drawing. We drew five winners to receive a year’s free subscription of Generations Magazine. The winners were Sandra Isokane of Honolulu, Connie Hovland of ‘Ewa Beach, W. Nemoto of Kailua, Carol Williams of Wai‘anae, and Florence Wong of Honolulu. Thank you to everyone for visiting our booth at the Senior Fair.

We enter this fall season with Medicare on our minds. Take your time to get all the information you need to make an educated decision. Each year the Executive Office on Aging’s Sage PLUS program provides wonderful information and volunteers to answer all your questions (see story on page 20).

Lastly, this is flu season so make sure you received your shots, eat healthy and exercise regularly. For a healthy, flu-fighting soup recipe, turn to page 25. For more information on flu shots, turn to page 24.

Welcome to all of you attending this year’s Senior Fair and enjoying the great exhibitors and presentations, full of resourceful information and contacts to living well. We all should thank the producer of this—the largest event of the year dedicated to our senior community— Mike Rossell and his associate Barbara Garofano who coordinates just about
    everything.

This month’s cover story features the story of The Plaza Assisted Living Properties, its commitment to the retirement community and its growing list of residences. We thank you Steve Metter and Mike Wood for their commitment to providing the much needed rental option to retirement living and providing the needed care for our growing Alzheimer’s and related dementia population.

Website - Generations Magazine - August - September 2012I have recommended to hundreds of families that we all need to have the talk with our family members on “aging in place” and the options to where we want to live the rest of our lives or at least for the foreseeable future. The Plaza Assisted Properties offer one of the options that our middle class will and should seriously take a visit and check out the benefits of living in a comfortable and safe place. Developer Steve Metter made a significant comment that we must think of it as a major benefit for our loved ones that “most residents who were previously living alone in their own homes have improved health after moving into an assisted living community. This usually occurs due to improved nutrition, socialization with peers, better exercise, health monitoring and medication management.”

And we also want to thank the many who have visited us online for their own personal knowledge and research and to view the many events posted on our calendar. The numbers are growing and we continue and support that aspect of our technologically-savvy readers.

Aloha mai ka kou. I would like to introduce myself. My name is Wilson Angel. I am the art director for Generations Magazine; and a close friend and classmate of Percy Ihara, the publisher of this magazine.

In this issue, Generations Magazine wanted to direct our reader’s attention to the Hawaiian concept of kuleana. Growing up, I only knew kuleana simply as “your business,”—as in “mind your own business.” Not much depth to it. However, I never realized how much weight the word actually carried…until now.

As we mature and as we experience more of life, we all come to realize our own kuleana, or our own deep sense of responsibility.
My first, were my parents. I moved back to Hawai‘i after realizing my place was to be near them. And to care for them. It certainly was a big shift in my life that transcended outwards to everything around me. I had learned much from that point on. Which leads me to this issue’s cover story.

I am greatly fortunate in coming to know Kimokeo Kapahulehua, my kahu. As you will read about him, to me, he epitomizes kuleana…and aloha. Both words intertwined. Both words containing selflessness. In this day and age, we search for that purpose within us—when in fact, it always existed—we just need to be aware of it when it arises. As for Kimokeo, his awareness came as quick as a light bulb turning on. He has focused his kuleana to his ‘aina (land), his ‘ohana (family of all races), his culture and his spirit. He moves with determination and with loving embrace of aloha (sharing of the breath), selflessly contributing his time and energy to so many various organizations
and programs that support seniors, cancer survivors, the environment, whale and ocean protections, etc. So with his example of selflessness, it practically beckons us to also look into ourselves and ask what is our responsibility?

In coming to know your own kuleana, know this—it doesn’t have to be grand. It simply needs to be honest (from your heart) and true (from your soul). And with those, you then apply commitment (your action). It can be as simple as giving your aloha

His doctors call him the “miracle man” because at 75 he works out nearly every day and goes to therapy to improve his speech and mobility. Thank you Coach and Mrs. Murakami for sharing your story with our readers. You are the best. Keep it up, Coach.

Some other wonderful stories in this issue include the Sakura House, a unique adult day center focusing on Japanese speaking clients, a health and fitness article about 90-year-old superwomen Joannie and ATRC, one of the most resourceful agencies catering to the physically challenged.

This month’s cover story is one that I have been anticipating for months as we bring to you Dr. Terry Shintani’s story. I met Dr. Shintani a few years ago while attending one of his famous seminars on eating healthy. My anticipation has been personal as I am constantly trying to find ways to live a healthier life with my eating habits and I wanted to pass his knowledge on to you, our readers.

So thank you Dr. Shintani for educating me on healthier eating habits. I recommend everyone to attend his workshops as knowledge is powerful and he definitely is one of the foremost doctors on this topic — not only in Hawai‘i but nationally. A big “Mahalo” also goes out to Frank Santana from “Down to Earth” All Vegetarian Organic & Natural food stores. I learned about various organic fruits and vegetables that I will be changing my own buying habits.

And on this issue, I am sharing my page with a noteworthy senior from Moanalua HS who’s interest is also shared by many — the secret in longevity—which this issue is about. Well done Fevelyn, and thank you to our young participants.

As we enter 2012 with optimistic minds, trust in our neighbors and plans to spend more time with our family and friends, Generations Magazine will be here to bring you more resources for life.

We promise to provide you with more resources that maybe you never heard of, never thought about and possibly may need, right now. We will be here to support you and your family, and we will work to partner with more agencies and companies to meet these goals.

We would like to thank Gov. Neil Abercrombie for allowing us into his world of political life and being so open with us. I truly believe he has a special place in his heart for the seniors of Hawai‘i and understands that our ku¯puna will always be an important foundation for our community.

In 2012, please visit our revamped and more user-friendly Web site, www.Generations808.com. On our homepage you can find all of our past issues and check out our calendar of Island events that pertain to aging. You will also want to click on our resource tab where you can view and print out all of our resource guides and view, or listen to, our resource library of topics. Many thanks to our Webmaster, Peterson Rosario. Oh, by the way, if you don’t have a computer, go to any state library and you can use one for free.

Congratulations to our 2011 Senior Fair survey winner Sharon Saito, who works for the State Library for the Blind and Physically Handicapped. She won our Vacations Hawai‘i Las Vegas vacation package for two. She excitedly let us know that she took her sister for a vacation during Thanksgiving. See photo below.

Lastly, in our upcoming February/March issue look for our reader survey. Give us your feedback and send the survey back to us for a chance to win a 5-night Las Vegas Vacation Package. My sincerest thanks to all of you for your support of our mature community!

    One year and counting…

It’s hard to believe that it’s already been one year since we revived Generations Magazine and brought it back for you—our readers. Our goal continues to be to publish a resource magazine that is of great value to you, your families and friends. Please continue to share each issue with your neighbors and relatives, as everywhere I go I get requests for more copies. I know we are appreciated when we receive new subscribers each month—thank you.

In celebration of our first anniversary, we want to share a few happenings with you. First, by the time this issue is published, we will have a totally new Web site. Please visit us at www.generations808.com. Secondly, we will restart our Generations Magazine radio show on Oct 25th. On KNDI channel AM 1270, we will air “live” every Tuesday and Thursday from 7 to 8 p.m. The radio show is partnering with the state’s Executive Office on Aging and other county agencies to air important news and events. We will also have special guests, so tune in and call in with your questions.

As we wrap up this issue, I’d like to send out two big special mahalos to the magazine’s art director Wilson Angel and editorial consultant Aimee Harris. Without their hard work and diligence, Generations Magazine would not be the resource magazine that it is today. Thanks also go to our photographer Brian Suda, and Sherry Goya who handles our distribution and advertising sales. Many more thanks go to our contributing writers who offer their expertise and provide such real life and useful information. And lastly, to our advertisers—thank you! We cannot print without your confidence in us.

As always, please feel free to send us stories, events and pictures you’d like to see in the magazine.

My sincerest thanks to all of you for your support of our mature community!

EDITORS NOTE-Message-from-the-Editor_image1As we kick off the summer, it is time to start spending more time with our friends and families, and to be thankful for our health. Although the summer days are long, our time is short. Take a moment to call and say hello to a family member or friend. Personally, once a year I spend several days with my entire family (30+ and growing) to play sports, go to the beach, eat meals together and reminisce about the good ol’ days. We spend hours talking story and, yes, we probably tell the same stories each year, but none of us mind. I tell all my friends that this is what keeps our family together. Thanks, Mom and Dad!

My family, like yours, is the most important part of my life. My elders are especially dear to me. I always want to make sure that they are happy, comfortable and protected. This is was my motivation behind inviting Prosecuting Attorney Keith Kaneshiro to be featured in our cover story. He has committed part of his term to senior issues, including raising awareness about elder abuse. In this issue he explains his agenda for improving crime prevention and fighting for justice for seniors.

Lastly, I’d like to mention that Generations Magazine was recently chosen by the Mayor of the City and County of Honolulu to be a recipient of the Lei Hulu Award for Volunteer Friendly Businesses. The award was given to us at the Mayor’s 45th Senior Recognition Program.

We are very proud of this award and thankful for the recognition by the Mayor of our business. We are always looking for your comments, stories, events and pictures. Please contact us to submit any of the above.

    Live well and get involved!
